Mythbuster #1 - Shipping Glass over Long Distances Costs More
For many years, I have noticed that a perceived geographic cost barrier appears to influence purchasing behavior among business owners. A large percentage of our customers continue to be apprehensive of purchasing Libbey glass from a supplier not located near them. Many spend countless hours trying to locate a distributor close to home or even one state away. As such, they fail to understand that the relationship between cost and distance is tenuous, especially when considering bulk purchases.
I’ve found that decision makers either do not understand their true landed cost or the basic fundamentals of bulk buying. Oddly enough, on a personal level, they understand the inherent value of shopping at conventional club stores – Sam’s Club, Costco, BJ’s – where they expect to pay lower prices but buy much larger quantities of household items including condiments and cleaning supplies.
Similar to the club store concept, buying in bulk offers many advantages. As glassware volume increases on any given order, a buyer benefits in specific ways: (1) the volume discount usually subsidizes the entire cost of transport and (2) the per jar cost of transportation goes way down as order quantity and weight increase. The result of this process is a lower landed cost for glass jars.
Of course, this is not true of UPS or FedEx. Small package carriers profit from long distance routes by using zone-based rating systems. Because of this, business owners accustomed to small package deliveries of glass jars are uninformed about any potential savings.
While sourcing locally is a good choice for readily available commodities, e.g. candle wax or labels, glass can be shipped on a pallet without incurring high costs. Apothecary jars, canning jars, candle jars, and mason jars can all be delivered by common carrier from New England to the west coast, mid west and south at an equal or lower cost than regional sources, particularly if the pallet is moving across state lines.
There is a great analogy from the airline industry to explain this phenomenon: why is a ticket to Dallas from Boston often more expensive than a ticket to Hong Kong? Answer: supply and demand. Not only are the long-haul jets going to Hong Kong reaping huge economies with larger seating areas, far less demand exists for daily flights to those destinations. Airlines then fill flights to capacity by restricting availability. This enables them to offer a lower ticket price on a longer flight.
Similarly, an imbalance of goods entering and leaving New England creates a unique buying opportunity. Over the last century New England transformed into a consumption-based economy. Originally one of the largest manufacturing regions, New England is now a net consumer of goods. As such, more trucks leave New England empty than full. Any outbound freight helps fill otherwise empty trailers. The net result of this imbalance is a superior freight discount that enables the average business to buy Libbey glass for well under list price.
Mythbuster #2 - Local suppliers will deliver glass jars faster
For years, I’ve noticed that most customers located west and south of us respond poorly when they discover our warehouse is in New England. Their immediate thought is that distance will delay receipt of their orders. They assume, in some cases rightly, that regional or local distributors can supply them with glass jars more conveniently and efficiently. Subsequently, I intend to dispel the myth of time in relation to distance.
Among glass and candle supply distributors, I’ve found that if average order processing time is factored into time in transit, then in reality glassware can be delivered from New England in less time than most regional sources, particularly if they are shipping across state lines and the order is designated for customer pick up.
One of the reasons has to do with our carriers’ guaranteed service levels – for example one and two day guarantees within a twenty-state radius of Connecticut, three day service to every location east of the Mississippi and four and five day service to the west coast. But the most significant reason this is possible has to do with our same-day shipping guarantee. All bulk glass orders processed by 2 PM leave on pallets same day, whereas the average candle supplies or glassware distributor can take up to three days to respond to an order. We can, in effect, deliver to New Orleans from Connecticut faster than the nearest competitors in Dallas or Nashville.
Geographical cost barriers therefore do not exist for bulk glass jars leaving New England. Unique regional freight imbalances, flexible and efficient pallet layering and easy to reach price discounts generate consistently lower landed costs and faster delivery times for Jar Store customers. Regardless of location, most of our customers immediately benefit from a dramatic cost decreases and better service terms. Same day shipping with a guaranteed delivery window makes this all possible, even on Libbey glass. Pervasive and all too common, the myth of extended lead times for jars shipped over long distances continues to plague the glass industry.
